Species history
The Pawns are from a dream I had in January 2025. Originally there was no name for this species, so I decided to cal them Pawns since their role is similar to chess pawns, but the more I keep using this name the more I start to dislike it. I'm not very good with naming things, so that means that this is going to be their name for a long time.
About the name
So, pawns... when I called them pawns, it was because their role was similar to chess pawns. They're the ones in the front row who face everything first, the ones who protect the others who are higher on the societal ladder; they're both simple and small and don't have much skill and can only go forward in the universal game, but just like chess pawns, if they manage to survive long enough to do something significant, they can be upgraded to be so much more.
A possible misconception is that them being called pawns means that they're insignificant and seen as disposable and worthless tools, which is not true at all. Pawns do not lead an existence of objectification but lead an existence of instrumentalization. They see themselves as instruments made by the empire to serve a greater purpose; no matter how simple or repetitive their task might be, it's all necessary things that keep the empire stable and functional. this is the main reason why pawns dont feel the need to rebel against their creators
While doing research about words and their defenitions i discovered the origins of the word "pioneer," and it made me realize that "pioneer" is a better word for these guys, though im not really sure if i should change their name or if "Pioneer" would just be a title for them... while "pawn" and "pioneer" have the same origins, their cultural perceptions are very different. Pawn gives off the feel of them being an exploitable, disposable workforce tricked into their role, while Pioneer is closer to what they are: explorers in the front row who are significant and valuable to their societies...
Design variation
Here are different ways to draw the eyes of the Pawns.
